Litchfield is a town in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,110 at the 2000 census.



According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.7 square miles (102.8 km²), of which, 37.4 square miles (96.9 km²) of it is land and 2.3 square miles (5.9 km²) of it (5.69%) is water.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,110 people, 1,190 households, and 897 families residing in the town. The population density was 83.1 people per square mile (32.1/km²). There were 1,595 housing units at an average density of 42.6/sq mi (16.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.36% White, 0.06% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.16% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80% of tradition the population.

There were 1,190 households out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.5% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 18.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $41,096, and the median income for a family was $42,220. Males had a median income of $33,000 versus $25,225 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,835. About 5.7% of families and 8.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.5% of those age 65 or over.


Litchfield has recently reconsolidated it's school system. The district has shut down Libby Tozier school, which served grades K-3. Carrie Ricker School Now serves grades K-3. Grades 4-8 have been moved to Sabattus Central school. Oak Hill High School serves students from the towns of Litchfield, Wales, and Sabattus and is located in Wales.[citation needed]
