Lugoff is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 6,278 at the 2000 census. The population was nearly 85% rural in 2000. Lugoff is locally pronounced Lew goff. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Lugoff is located at 34°13′14″N 80°41′31″W / 34.22056°N 80.69194°W / 34.22056; -80.69194 (34.220455, -80.691826).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 12.9 square miles (33.4 km²), of which, 12.8 square miles (33.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.54%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 6,278 people, 2,364 households, and 1,846 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 488.9 people per square mile (188.8/km²). There were 2,467 housing units at an average density of 192.1/sq mi (74.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 82.56% White, 15.45% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.32% of the population.

There were 2,364 households out of which 40.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.9% were non-families. 19.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.04.
