Luzerne County is the most populated county in northeastern Pennsylvania, with a total population of 319,250 (as of the 2000 census). It is located in the northern Anthracite area called "The Coal Region". Its county seat is Wilkes-Barre. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes Barre area.
