Macon County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population was 15,762. Its county seat is Macon[1]. The county was organized in 1837 and named for Nathaniel Macon, a North Carolina politician. The first person to settle in the county was Nathaniel Tuttle during the late 1790s.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 813 square miles (2,104 km²), of which, 804 square miles (2,082 km²) of it is land and 9 square miles (23 km²) of it (1.08%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 15,762 people, 6,501 households, and 4,381 families residing in the county. The population density was 20 people per square mile (8/km²). There were 7,502 housing units at an average density of 9 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.18% White, 2.21% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 22.8% were of German, 21.8% American, 13.9% English and 10.8% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000.
