Michiana Shores is a town in Springfield and Michigan townships, LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 330 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Michigan City, Indiana-La Porte, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Michiana Shores is located in northwesternmost Springfield Township, and is the township's sole incorporated community.

Michiana Shores takes its name from the Michiana region along the Michigan-Indiana border.

Geography

Michiana Shores is located at 41°45′23″N 86°49′6″W / 41.75639°N 86.81833°W / 41.75639; -86.81833 (41.756290, -86.818447)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.9 km²), all of it land.

The town lies on the shore of Lake Michigan, just south of the Michigan state line. The town is adjacent to Michiana, Michigan, and also neighbors Long Beach, Indiana along the coast to the west.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 330 people, 162 households, and 99 families residing in the town. The population density was 954.0 people per square mile (364.0/km²). There were 339 housing units at an average density of 980.0/sq mi (374.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 92.12% White, 0.30% African American, 0.30% Native American, 3.33% Asian, 0.30% from other races, and 3.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.21% of the population.

There were 162 households out of which 16.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.04 and the average family size was 2.58.

In the town the population was spread out with 14.8% under the age of 18, 3.0% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 33.3% from 45 to 64, and 26.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 50 years. For every 100 females there were 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.9 males.
