New Hempstead, formally known as Kakiat (Kackyachteweke), is a village in the Town of Ramapo, Rockland County, New York, United States located north of New Square; east of Wesley Hills; south of Pomona and west of New City. The population was 4,767 at the 2000 census.

Joseph Berger of The New York Times said in a 1997 article that New Hempstead was one of several Town of Ramapo villages formed by non-Jewish people and more secular Jewish people "to preserve the sparse Better Homes and Garden [sic] ambiance that attracted them to Rockland County."[1]

The village is served by the Spring Valley and New City post offices.



New Hempstead is located at 41°8′45″N 74°2′48″W / 41.14583°N 74.04667°W / 41.14583; -74.04667 (41.145945, -74.046641)[2].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.4 km²), of which, 2.8 square miles (7.4 km²) of it is land and 0.35% is water.


As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 4,767 people, 1,282 households, and 1,160 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,678.8 people per square mile (648.1/km²). There were 1,300 housing units at an average density of 457.8/sq mi (176.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 69.96% White, 17.54% African American, 0.17% Native American, 7.26% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 3.06% from other races, and 1.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.04% of the population.
