North Merrick is a community and census-designated place in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 11,844 at the 2000 census.

North Merrick is located on the south shore of Long Island. It is known for being a middle class neighborhood and having a large Italian and Irish population, As well as a rising Hispanic and African American population

Geography

North Merrick is located at 40°41′8″N 73°33′29″W / 40.68556°N 73.55806°W / 40.68556; -73.55806 (40.685691, -73.558116)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²), of which, 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²) of it is land and 0.56% is water.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 11,844 people, 3,963 households, and 3,285 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,690.0 per square mile (2,583.6/km²). There were 4,004 housing units at an average density of 2,261.6/sq mi (873.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 90.57% White, .77% African American, 0.09% Native American, 3.19% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and .31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.26% of the population.

There were 3,963 households out of which 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.6% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.1% were non-families. 14.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.30.
