Oakhurst is a census-designated place and unincorporated area located within Ocean Township, in Monmouth County, New Jersey. As of the United States 2000 Census, the CDP population was 4,152.



Oakhurst is located at 40°15′42″N 74°01′35″W / 40.261557°N 74.026450°W / 40.261557; -74.026450 (40.261557, -74.026450).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 km2 (1.6 mi2), all land.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 4,152 people, 1,397 households, and 1,176 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 989.6/km2 (2,570.0/mi2). There were 1,459 housing units at an average density of 347.7/km2 (903.1/mi2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.10% White, 0.75% African American, 2.29% Asian, 0.31% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.02% of the population.

Oakhurst holds a substantial amount of Syrian Jews. On the edge of Oakhurst there is one of the biggest synagogues in New Jersey called Magen David Synagouge. Most of the Syrian Jews who live in Oakhurst have moved there for the synagogue. Every sabbath they have services where hundreds of the Syrians gather together for services throughout the whole year.

There were 1,397 households out of which 42.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.0% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.8% were non-families. 13.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.28.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males.
