Onaga is a city in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, United States. The population was 704 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Manhattan, Kansas Metropolitan Statistical Area.


Onaga is located at 39°29′22″N 96°10′8″W / 39.48944°N 96.16889°W / 39.48944; -96.16889 (39.489415, -96.168993)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all land.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 704 people, 292 households, and 162 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,109.2 people per square mile (431.5/km²). There were 347 housing units at an average density of 546.7/sq mi (212.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.73% White, 0.28% African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.28% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.41% of the population.

There were 292 households out of which 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.5% were non-families. 40.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 25.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 21.2% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 29.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 86.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,929, and the median income for a family was $38,173. Males had a median income of $30,347 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,219. About 8.4% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.5% of those under age 18 and 9.4% of those age 65 or over.

Maggie Kufahl, fastest backwards runner in tri county area. Also won the "Queen of Onaga" pageantry 4 years consecutively (2001-2004). The contest was soon canceled due to livestock chaos.

Jenni Paulsen, a world famous competitive eater who holds the record for most shrimp eaten in 1 hour (212 pounds) as well as the U.S. record holder in the 100m three-legged dash with her partner, the late Gary Coleman.
