Onyx (formerly, Scodie)[2] is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. Onyx is located 3.5 miles (6 km) east-northeast of Weldon,[2] at an elevation of 2795 feet (852 m).[1] The population was 476 at the 2000 census.



Onyx is located at 35°41′25″N 118°13′14″W / 35.69028°N 118.22056°W / 35.69028; -118.22056.[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.6 square miles (29.9 km²), all of it land.


The place was originally called Scodie in honor of William Scodie, who opened a store in 1861.[2] The first post office at Onyx opened in 1889.[2]


As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 476 people, 197 households, and 128 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 41.2 people per square mile (15.9/km²). There were 281 housing units at an average density of 24.3/sq mi (9.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.49% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 1.89% Native American, 0.63% from other races, and 3.78% from two or more races. 4.62% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 197 households out of which 22.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.92.
