Pomeroy is a city in Calhoun County, Iowa, United States. The population was 710 at the 2000 census.



On July 6, 1893, Pomeroy was struck by a tornado that was later estimated to be F5 on the Fujita scale. With a damage path 500 yards (460 m) wide and 55 miles (89 km) long, the tornado destroyed about 80% of the homes in Pomeroy. The tornado killed 71 people and injured 200.[1]

In 1910, Pomeroy was the birthplace of Gordon Prange, who became Chief Historian in General Douglas MacArthur's staff and wrote the manuscript At Dawn We Slept, The Untold Story Of Pearl Harbor, the basis for the film Tora! Tora! Tora!.


Pomeroy is located at 42°32′54″N 94°41′1″W / 42.54833°N 94.68361°W / 42.54833; -94.68361 (42.548395, -94.683541)[2].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.3 km²), all of it land.


As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 710 people, 314 households, and 184 families residing in the city. The population density was 347.4 people per square mile (134.4/km²). There were 356 housing units at an average density of 174.2/sq mi (67.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.58% White, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% from other races, and 0.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.28% of the population.

There were 314 households out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.4% were non-families. 39.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 20.4% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 29.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 81.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.4 males.
