Pontotoc County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population was 26,726. Its county seat is Pontotoc[1]. Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "land of hanging grapes".

The county is part of the Tupelo, Mississippi, Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The original Natchez Trace and the current-day Natchez Trace Parkway pass through the southeast corner of Pontotoc county.



According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 501 square miles (1,298 km²), of which, 497 square miles (1,288 km²) of it is land and 4 square miles (9 km²) of it (0.73%) is water.
