Primera is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States, near Combes. The population was 2,723 at the 2000 census. It is part of the BrownsvilleHarlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area.



Primera is located at 26°13′23″N 97°45′5″W / 26.22306°N 97.75139°W / 26.22306; -97.75139 (26.223152, -97.751470)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.5 square miles (4.0 km²), all of it land.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,723 people, 735 households, and 659 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,772.4 people per square mile (682.7/km²). There were 780 housing units at an average density of 507.7/sq mi (195.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 81.60% White, 0.66% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 14.03% from other races, and 3.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 89.57% of the population.

There were 735 households out of which 54.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.4% were married couples living together, 15.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 10.3% were non-families. 8.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.70 and the average family size was 3.90.

In the town the population was spread out with 36.2% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 males.
