Red Lake County is a county located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population was 4,299. Its county seat is Red Lake Falls[1].

History

Red Lake County was formed on December 24, 1896 from sections of Polk County. It was named after the Red Lake River. Red Lake County is also the only county within the state of Minnesota to not have a single stop light within the entire county.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 4,299 people, 1,727 households, and 1,131 families residing in the county. The population density was 10 people per square mile (4/km²). There were 1,883 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.44% White, 0.19% Black or African American, 1.84% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.30% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 31.9% were of Norwegian, 25.0% German, 16.7% French and 6.3% French Canadian ancestry according to Census 2000.
