River Bend is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was estimated at 3,069 in 2006.[1] It is part of the New Bern, North Carolina Micropolitan Statistical Area.



River Bend is located at 35°4′28″N 77°8′55″W / 35.07444°N 77.14861°W / 35.07444; -77.14861 (35.074324, -77.148519)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.1 km²), of which, 2.5 square miles (6.6 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²) of it (7.27%) is water.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,923 people, 1,343 households, and 988 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,147.1 people per square mile (442.6/km²). There were 1,477 housing units at an average density of 579.6/sq mi (223.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 93.29% White, 5.71% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.03% of the population.

There were 1,343 households out of which 15.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.3% were married couples living together, 4.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was 2.40.

In the town the population was spread out with 14.0% under the age of 18, 3.6% from 18 to 24, 18.4% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 36.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 57 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.
