Sangamon County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2008, the population was 194,925. Its county seat is Springfield, the state capital.

The Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Sangamon and Menard counties.



According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 877 square miles (2,271 km²), of which 868 square miles (2,249 km²) is land and 9 square miles (23 km²) (1.01%) is water.
