Silver City is a town in Humphreys County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 337 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Silver City is located at 33°5′43″N 90°29′45″W / 33.09528°N 90.49583°W / 33.09528; -90.49583 (33.095335, -90.495814)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), of which, 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (3.17%) is water.

People

John Burwell Reed, or better known as Jack Reed was born February 2, 1933 in Silver City, Mississippi is a former professional baseball player. He was an outfielder over parts of 3 seasons (1961–1963) with the New York Yankees. Reed was a member of the 1961 World Series champion Yankees. An alumnus of the University of Mississippi, for his career he hit .233 with 1 home run and 6 runs batted in in 222 games played.

On June 25, 1962 Jack Reed hit the only home run of his career in the top of the 22 inning as the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers. Reed often joked that the Yankees kept him on the roster to caddy for slugger Mickey Mantle.

Acoustic guitarist George Cunningham attended school in Silver City. Since 2002, Cunningham has played with the "Faux Frenchman," a group he helped form. Cunningham grew up on a farm located on Highway 49 West between Silver City and Louise and played summer baseball in Louise. He lived in Canada for a period of time.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 337 people, 124 households, and 76 families residing in the town. The population density was 553.7 people per square mile (213.3/km²). There were 133 housing units at an average density of 218.5/sq mi (84.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 21.66% White and 78.34% African American.

There were 124 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.5% were married couples living together, 24.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 36.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.59.

In the town the population was spread out with 30.6% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 68.3 males.
