Social Circle is a city in Walton and Newton counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 3,379 at the 2000 census. The city was named circa 1826, and incorporated in 1832. The etymology of the name is unknown, [3] but the municipality's border is partially circular.



Social Circle is located at 33°39′24″N 83°43′2″W / 33.65667°N 83.71722°W / 33.65667; -83.71722 (33.656620, -83.717215)[4].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.3 square miles (29.2 km²), of which 11.2 square miles (29.1 km²) are land and 0.04 square mile (0.1 km²) (0.27%) is water. It was founded in 1820.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,379 people, 1,176 households, and 873 families residing in the city. The population density was 300.5 people per square mile (116.0/km²). There were 1,264 housing units at an average density of 112.4/sq mi (43.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 57.21% White, 41.31% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population.

There were 1,176 households, of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% were married couples living together, 21.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.21.
