Sorento is a village in Bond County, Illinois, United States. The population was 601 at the 2000 census.

History

Sorento was incorporated as a village in 1885.[1]

Charles Lindbergh is known to have landed in fields just outside of Sorento while preparing for his solo transatlantic flight.[2]

Education

Sorento is home to the Sorento Elementary School which educates students ages Pre-K through 8th grade.

Geography

Sorento is located at 38°59′57″N 89°34′26″W / 38.99917°N 89.57389°W / 38.99917; -89.57389 (38.999264, -89.573809).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.4 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 601 people, 238 households, and 167 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,110.5 people per square mile (429.7/km²). There were 255 housing units at an average density of 471.2/sq mi (182.3/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.17% White, 0.67% Native American, 0.33% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population.

There were 238 households out of which 38.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% were non-families. 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.03.
