South Hutchinson is a city in Reno County, Kansas, United States, and a "suburb" of Hutchinson. The population was 2,539 at the 2000 census.



Founded in 1887 by Benjamin Blanchard of Terre Haute, Indiana.


South Hutchinson is located at 38°1′38″N 97°56′23″W / 38.02722°N 97.93972°W / 38.02722; -97.93972 (38.027185, -97.939769)[3]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.3 km²), of which, 2.8 square miles (7.2 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.07%) is water.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,539 people, 1,143 households, and 675 families residing in the city. The population density was 912.4 people per square mile (352.6/km²). There were 1,210 housing units at an average density of 434.8/sq mi (168.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.46% White, 0.79% African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.23% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.32% of the population.

There were 1,143 households out of which 24.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% were non-families. 37.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.77.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 25.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 82.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.7 males.
