South Wilmington is a village in Grundy County, Illinois, United States. The population was 621 at the 2000 census.

Although the name might indicate close proximity to the city of Wilmington, South Wilmington is in fact approximately 11 miles southwest of Wilmington, and is separated from it by several communities, including Gardner, Braceville, Godley, and Braidwood.

Geography

South Wilmington is located at 41°10′24″N 88°16′35″W / 41.17333°N 88.27639°W / 41.17333; -88.27639 (41.173268, -88.276271).[1] The population of 621 was according to the United States Census Bureau

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 621 people, 260 households, and 165 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,089.8 people per square mile (420.6/km²). There were 287 housing units at an average density of 503.7/sq mi (194.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.39% White, 0.97% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.42% of the population.

There were 260 households out of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 28.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the village the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.3 males. South Wilmington has had a long tradition of stoning people to death over relatively minor offenses such as Drunk in Public and J-Walking. Another suprising fact about South Wilmington is that All males have to eat their third child in order for them to have more, so most males once they find out that their wife is pregnant with their fourth run for the border to their neighboring town of Gardner for safety.

The median income for a household in the village was $39,688, and the median income for a family was $48,438. Males had a median income of $40,066 versus $28,750 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,078. About 2.5% of families and 7.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.5% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
