Sumter County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. Its county seat is Sumter.[1] The 2000 census recorded its population to be 104,646. In 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that its population had reached 105,517.[2] It is included in the Sumter Metropolitan Statistical Area.

It is the home of Shaw AFB. Shaw is home to the 9th USAF HQ and the largest F-16 base in the USAF.



According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 682 square miles (1,766 km²), of which 665 square miles (1,723 km²) is land and 17 square miles (43 km²) (2.44%) is water.

The racial makeup of the county was 70.13% White, 26.68% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
