Swanville is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,357 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 21.6 square miles (56.0 km²), of which, 19.8 square miles (51.2 km²) of it is land and 1.9 square miles (4.9 km²) of it (8.73%) is water.

The Town of Swanville has a dam owned and operated by Maine Hyrdo, now known as Goose River Hydro, Inc., which also owns the water rights. In 1979 an agreement was brokered between the towns of Swanville, Frankfort, Searsport and Goose River Hydro, Inc. The agreement covers water levels as well as Goose River Hydro's responsibility for dam and land around it.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,357 people, 522 households, and 371 families residing in the town. The population density was 68.7 people per square mile (26.5/km²). There were 730 housing units at an average density of 36.9/sq mi (14.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.54% White, 0.15% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.15% Asian, and 2.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.11% of the population.

There were 522 households out of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,417, and the median income for a family was $35,833. Males had a median income of $28,083 versus $19,861 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,483. About 10.5% of families and 14.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.8% of those under age 18 and 7.7% of those age 65 or over.

Residents of Swanville may receive high speed internet services (current in 2010) through the Unity Telephone Company (http://www.unitelme.com/), which provides 900mhz and 3ghz wireless internet broadband service via a transmitter tower on top of Mt. Ephraim, in nearby Searsport, Maine. As of 2006, a similar wireless service was also available through Mainely Wired, a locally owned ISP, now part of Premium Choice Broadband. The town of Swanville recently started its first town website at http://www.swanville.org. The town also has a Facebook page.
