West Whittier-Los Nietos is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California, near the San Gabriel River and the San Gabriel River Freeway (605 Fwy.). The population was 25,129 at the 2000 census. The census area consists of separate unincorporated communities of Los Nietos and West Whittier.



West Whittier-Los Nietos is located at 33°58′34″N 118°4′8″W / 33.97611°N 118.06889°W / 33.97611; -118.06889 (33.976113, -118.069000),[1] or about three miles (5 km) northwest of Whittier.[2]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²), all land.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 25,129 people, 6,720 households, and 5,597 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,865.5/km² (9,997.3/mi²). There were 6,857 housing units at an average density of 1,054.8/km² (2,728.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 53.06% White, 0.57% African American, 1.25% Native American, 1.63% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 38.49% from other races, and 4.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 83.07% of the population.

There were 6,720 households out of which 43.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.7% were non-families. 13.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.73 and the average family size was 4.04.
