Williamsburg County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The 2000 census recorded its population to be 37,217. The 2005 census estimate placed the population at 35,395.[1] Its county seat is Kingstree.[2]



According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 937 square miles (2,427 km²), of which 934 square miles (2,419 km²) is land and 3 square miles (8 km²) (0.32%) is water.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 37,217 people, 13,714 households, and 10,052 families residing in the county. The population density was 40 people per square mile (15/km²). There were 15,552 housing units at an average density of 17 per square mile (6/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 32.74% White, 66.26% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.16% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
