Woods County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population was 9,089. Its county seat is Alva[1]. The county is named after Samuel Newitt Wood, a renowned Kansas populist. [2]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,290 square miles (3,341 km²), of which 1,287 square miles (3,332 km²) is land and 4 square miles (9 km²) (0.27%) is water.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 9,089 people, 3,684 households, and 2,243 families residing in the county. The population density was 7 people per square mile (3/km²). There were 4,492 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 93.41% White, 2.38% Black or African American, 1.61% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 2.42% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,684 households out of which 24.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.90% were married couples living together, 7.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.10% were non-families. 33.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.81.
