Woodson County (standard abbreviation: WO) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population was 3,788. Its county seat is Yates Center.[1]

Law and government

Although the Kansas Constitution was amended in 1986 to allow the sale of alcoholic liquor by the individual drink with the approval of voters, Woodson County has remained a prohibition, or "dry", county.[2]

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 505 square miles (1,309 km²), of which, 501 square miles (1,297 km²) of it is land and 5 square miles (13 km²) of it (0.96%) is water.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 3,788 people, 1,642 households, and 1,052 families residing in the county. The population density was 8 people per square mile (3/km²). There were 2,076 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.96% White, 0.82% Black or African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.24% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 1.37% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
