Yankton County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population was 21,652. Its county seat is Yankton.[1]

Yankton County is the only county in the Yankton Micropolitan Statistical Area.



According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 533 square miles (1,379 km²), of which 522 square miles (1,351 km²) is land and 11 square miles (29 km²) (2.08%) is water. It is bordered by the Missouri River.


The county is divided into nine townships: Gayville, Jamesville, Marindahl, Mayfield, Mission Hill, Turkey Valley, Utica, Volin, Walshtown; and two areas of unorganized territory: Southeast Yankton and West Yankton.
