Windows95
v.WindowsNT

MacOS
UNIX
Telnet
FTP

While Windows95 and WindowsNT systems may look and behave very much the same, the administration and security of these two operating systems is drastically different.

Windows95 users can install any software application, delete any file, create new directories and don't have to use a login id to access the machine.

WindowsNT users may not install any software application, can delete some files and create some directories. They do need to login to their systems. WindowsNT uses an "administrator" function that sets permissions and security over the entire system. Thus while one user may be able to use a program, another user may not have been given access to use it. Typically, users cannot delete other users files. If a user has never signed onto a WindowsNT system before, the default password is the last 8 digits of their Social Security Number.

Most of the newer systems installed in faculty and administrative offices are WindowsNT. For WebFactory, you will still be able to access the Princeton website and you will have full permission to use programs like Telnet, QVT Terminal and WS-FTP.

The desktop

Users often like to keep their files on their desktop in order to keep track them visually.   For those familar with Macintoshes, although the desktop seem similar, their position within the file structure is different, depending on which programs you're using.

If you're using MS Word or Netscape, the desktop appears at the very top of the file directory.  For example, if you're using Composer and want to save the file to the desktop, you would choose MENU: File --> Save As... and then click on the arrow in the "Save In" pop-up menu box.  When the expanded box appears, you would move the menubar all the way to the top.  The Desktop will be the first icon, followed by My Computer.

If you're using WS_FTP on Windows95, the path to the desktop is c:\windows\desktop.  If you're using WS_FTP on WindowsNT, the path is c:\winnt\profiles\<userid>\desktop.

Finding File Transfer Programs

On both systems, the programs you'll need are Telnet or QVT Terminal, and WS_FTP.  They are often contained within the Information Access folder which usually on the desktop or off the START menu (MENU(bottom):START --> Information Access-->QVT_term-->Terminal or MENU(bottom):START --> Information Access-->Ws-ftp-->WS_FTP95 LE). If there is no Information Access folder, you can usually access these files directly from the START menu (MENU(bottom):START -->QVT_term-->Terminal or MENU(bottom):START --> Ws-ftp-->WS_FTP95 LE).  If you still cannot locate these files, use the FIND program off the START menu MENU(bottom):START -->Find-->Files or Computer). Type in terminal or ws-ftp in the dialog box in order to locate these files.  Once the computer has located all the files with terminal or ws_ftp in their title, it will provide a clickable list.  Double click on the application icon in order to start the program

If you can't locate these files, download them from:

That's it for Windows; let's move on to MacOS.
