Telnet
and QVT Terminal are programs that allow you to logon to host computers
(like the Unix system "Arizona"). NCSA Telnet is the terminal program for
MacOS, while QVT Terminal is used on Windows systems - both 95 and NT.
Telnet can be found
under the Apple Menu Items on the MAC under "Information Access". QVT Terminal
can also be found under the "Information Access" folder from the Start
menu in Windows.
NCSA TelnetStarting NCSA TelnetConnecting To a Host 1.Start by double-clicking on the application NCSA Telnet PU 2.7b4. 2.Select Open Connection from the File menu. This will cause the connection dialog box to appear; your cursor will be next to the Host/Session Name. 3.By default, the Host/Session Name is arizona.princeton.edu. If you click OK, you will be connected to that host. If you wish to be connected to a different host, enter a different host name in the Host/Session box then click OK. (If the host you wish to connect to is in the same domain as your computer, you may specify just the hostname, omitting the domain. For example, if your computer is in the Princeton.EDU domain, then to connect to foo.princeton.edu, you may type foo. If your computer is outside the Princeton.EDU domain, you will probably need to type foo.princeton.edu instead. If your computer is in a subdomain of Princeton.EDU and is not running Open Transport, you will usually need to type foo.princeton.edu as well.)4.After a few moments, a session window will appear, and you will be connected to the host. You can then use the host computer; you may have to begin by logging in to the host by typing in the CIT userid and password. 5. You can now create files, change directory permissions and create/remove directories in this Unix environment. For more information on using Unix line commands refer to the Unix webpage.
1.Log out from any hosts to which you have connected. Logging out from a host normally will close the associated session window. Some hosts do not require you to log out; you can just close the associated session window by clicking in the close box or by selecting the Close command in the File menu. Note that closing a session this way may not log you out from some hosts. 2.Choose Quit from the File menu.
QVT TerminalQVT Terminal allows your PC to emulate a terminal and connect to other computers besides the IBM Mainframe on the network. Windows allows you to use QVT Terminal to run multiple sessions simultaneously to one or more remote services such as arizona, a campus Unix resource. To connect to a remote host with QVT Terminal follow these steps: 1.Open the Start menu, select Information Access, and select Terminal. To open another session follow those same steps again. On-line help is available under the Help menu of the "General Unix Profile" window of QVT Terminal. To close your session, complete these steps: 1.Type logout to close your connection with the remote machine. You may wish to customize QVT Terminal's profile. If so, click on the Setup menu and select Default Settings. Now you can change the session's name, font choice, text and background color, and window size among other things. Once you've finished your customization, click OK. That's it for Telnet; let's move on to FTP. |
