Welcome
to the 1998 workshop
for graduate students
about to teach for the first
time at Princeton. Teaching
undergraduates is a serious
responsibility, but it is also
a unique opportunity to learn
more about your own field
and to enjoy a new aspect
of campus life. Teaching well
will require your time; it will
also offer you wonderful and
rewarding experiences. We
hope to help you maximize
the positive by providing some
direction, suggestions, and a
few caveats to get you off to a good start.
The ideas and materials
used in this program have been
developed over the last seven
years by faculty members,
administrators, and graduate
students at Princeton. The AI
Handbook which will be
distributed at the first
session is full of important
information that you will
need throughout your teaching.
The included case studies have
all been written by AIs who
were in your teaching situation
not too long ago. Their
experiences beginning to teach
at Princeton give you the
benefit of what they learned
the hard way. We know this
won't make teaching a "piece
of cake," but we hope it will
make the endeavor more
productive for you and
or your students.
You will notice
on the schedule that we have
"New Registration" each
morning. That applies to
those participants who are
attending the program for
the first time. You register
only once throughout the
course of the program. But
you will need to pick up
a name tag each morning.
So - welcome again.
We're pleased you've joined us and
we look forward to working
with you this week and all
year long. We hope you find
the program worthwhile, and
that you have a good time as well!
Good luck!
