Fall 2009 Office Hours: Thursdays 2:30-3:30pm, Room 115 1879 Hall

I'm a graduate student in philosophy at Princeton University. I work on philosophy of mind, specifically the problem of mental representation.

I'm interested in questions such as What is mental representation? What is consciousness? What is the nature of our relationship with the world? Although the questions are in some sense metaphysical, the views we can take on them have empirical consequences that we can independently assess. I've found myself spending most of my time trying to assess such consequences. This has led me to a view on which consciousness is just the same thing as mental representation, mental representation/consciousness is production of the mind or brain (as opposed to a relation to things in the world), concepts don't represent much at all, and our perceptual experiences of colors represent things that don't exist.

When I'm not doing philosophy, I enjoy sensory and non-sensory experiences of other kinds, especially those induced by outdoor activities, such as swimming, hiking, and the occasional rock climbing and sailing. Given the large weight my work places on first-personal observational data provided by experience, I like to think of these activities as part of my "research".
