Aquinas Announcements, 2/21/10 - 2/27/10

Hi Aquini,

Happy Feast of the Chair of St. Peter! The weekly announcements have been reformatted so that they are shorter and easier to read quickly - please scan through if you have a moment. A summary is at the beginning, followed by announcements for the week. Details with further descriptions of the events can be found at the end of the email.

Announcements:
1. Volunteer Opportunity: Tutoring children in Trenton

From Michael Skiles '12: As you put together your schedules this semester, I encourage you to consider spending a little time helping under-privileged, but determined, middle school children succeed in school, by tutoring in Trenton's Foundation Academy. This school,(grades 5-8) is actually operated by several Princeton alumni whose vision is to take the poorest kids in Trenton, and not only prepare them well for high school, but inspire them to work to even get in to great places like Princeton (they showed us this whole classroom decorated to the theme of Princeton and assured us that Princetonians are like rock stars to these kids, and they would love to have us as role-models for these children.) At any rate, though very well organized, there are a lot of kids there every day after school who need tutoring, and not nearly enough people to tutor them.
We tutor three times a week, leaving and returning in University vehicles at the following times:
Tuesday & Wednesday 3:30-6:00, Friday 3:10-5:50.

2. Confession during Lent
Lent is a season of penance. This is an excellent time to turn back to God. Return to Him by coming to the Sacrament of Penance, especially if you have not been for a while. Fr. Tom or Fr. Marty would be happy to meet with you at any time for Confession. Please see one of them either before or after daily Mass or Sunday Mass.

Details:
A Pro-Life, Pro-Family Reception....
Professors Robert P. George, Harold James, John Londregan, and Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe, along with several other Princeton University faculty members, visiting scholars, and clergy invite Pro-Life, Pro-Family students and community members for an evening of conversation, tea, coffee, and dessert on Wednesday, February 24th, at 7:30 pm in the Bobst Hall East Room. Come hear about pro-life and pro-family initiatives on campus and meet other supportive students, faculty, community members, and friends.  The event is informal and will last just over an hour. Students with other obligations are welcome to come late or leave early.  Families are welcome.
Please RSVP to anscombe@princeton.edu and please feel free to invite and bring friends!

Daily Mass
Now is an excellent time to start coming to Daily Mass if you haven't in the past, or else to resolve to attempt to go more often. Frequently and reverently receiving Our Lord in the Eucharist is one of the single most effective ways to grow in holiness.
The priest is available for Confession before or after Mass.

Marriage in the Church
All three of our campus chaplains, Fr. Tom Mullelly (Director), Fr. Marty Miller, and Deacon Doug Lovejoy will speak for the first half of this event, and then we will form small groups to discuss informally the week's topic. Our chaplains have extensive experience counseling couples preparing for marriage, and have witnessed the challenges and joys of marriage as it is lived out.
This is also a unique opportunity to learn from your fellow students who are seeking a deeper understanding of marriage. If you have not been to many Aquinas events outside of Mass, we especially encourage you to come out for this. No matter how much or little you know about the Church and her beliefs about marriage, you are very welcome. We have designed this event specially for its wide appeal, regardless of your background. "Marriage in the Church" will also be apt for those who are already in a relationship and are thinking about marriage, however distant it may be.
Over the next three weeks before midterms week, we will discuss the topics of Permanency, Exclusivity, and Openness to Life as they pertain to marriage. No reading or advance preparation is needed to attend.

Men's Catholic Principles
Every Monday Aquinas guys meet in the "Upper Room" of Murray Dodge to discuss issues pertaining to the Faith and practical matters of being a Catholic at Princeton. Right now we're reading George Weigel's Letters to a Young Catholic. Email Christian Sahner '07 (csahner@princeton.edu) for more information.

RCIA and Bible Study
RCIA is a program that helps you study the Catholic faith so that you can receive the sacraments next Easter. In particular, for non-Catholics it is one of the most common ways to enter the Church, and for Catholics, RCIA will prepare you for the sacrament of Confirmation this Easter if you have not yet received it.
Each week we discuss the week's Gospel, and also study from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Dinner is provided so you can study, discuss, and eat at the same time!

Night prayer and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
Night prayer and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place on Tuesday evenings at 10:00pm in the University Chapel. This is a great way to strengthen your devotion to Our Lord in the Eucharist, and to learn how to pray the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours).

Thursday Night Dinner followed by Catholic Graduate Fellowship
All are encouraged to join us for dinner (provided by the Aquinas Institute). Dinner will be followed by a discussion on Jeff Pinyan's Praying the Mass: The Prayers of the People, Chapters 3 and 4. Please feel free to join us even if you did not have time to read the chapters! To get your copy of the book ($9), e-mail Sofia Machado at smachado@princeton.edu.

Women's Catholic Principles
Join Aquinas women for a weekly discussion group on issues pertinent to Catholic intellectual and spiritual life. Discussion topics will include: Catholic doctrine; Inspiration for Life: The Example of the Saints; and spiritual readings. Co-led by Christina DiGasbarro '12, Eva Wash '11, Sophia Pacanowsky, and Ashley Crouch. Email Sophia (sophia.pacanowsky@gmail.com) for more information.

Dinner at
Aquinas House
Free food (often pizza) and fellowship are offered on Thursday nights at Aquinas House.

Society of St. Socrates
Aquinas has recently begun this new discussion group, led by Brendan Carroll '11. Please come by to check it out:
The Society of St. Socrates will be a discussion of Christian theology and apologetics based on a broad range of authors and artists, among whom are: Plato, Erasmus, Michaelangelo, St. John the Evangelist, Mozart, Greene and Chesterton.  Topics under consideration include theodicy, the Euthyphro dilemma, and the Real Presence.  Our meetings will be held on Fridays at 8:30pm in the Class of 1951 Seminar Room, to the right off of Chancellor Green Rotunda.  Readings will consist in no more than 20 pages per meeting, and meetings will be held every two weeks.
