Galaxy Encounter
Simon Su (visualization specialist)
Princeton Institute for Computational Science and Engineering (PICSciE)
This is a computer visualization showing the structure of two interacting galaxies when the universe was only one sixth of its present age. These galaxies are in the process of merging and we can see here how gas accretes onto galaxies through complex spiral arm-like streams. The smaller galaxy in the lower right just had a close passage around the large galaxy dominating the view, partly creating the extended filamentary structure between them. Visualization abstractions like this one help researchers "see" 3D structures and study the dynamics in complex systems.
