The Patriotic Quantum Bit

This patriotically colored structure is a superconducting charge quantum bit, or qubit. It is designed to hold quantum information, meaning it can hold the logical 0 and 1 states, and arbitrary superpositions of the two. The red, white and blue islands are made of aluminum and hold the actual quantum information. The green and light blue islands are made of niobium and are part of a circuit used to store and read information from the qubit. The dark regions are the underlying sapphire substrate. This image was taken on the Quanta 200 FEG Environmental SEM located at the Imaging and Analysis Center.
