Sarah Paden

Department of Music

Sarah Paden’s project examines the socioeconomic and cultural factors influencing the overall supply of opera singers in different vocal categories in order to understand recent declines in the availability of great opera singers in the heavier vocal categories.  It is hypothesized that fewer potentially great singers remain in the profession long enough for “heavier” voices to mature, due to the decline of classical music in general, and opera in particular, as a cultural priority and as a fashionable and remunerative career, relative to both other musical and non-musical careers.
