Micaela Baranello

Department of Musicology/Music

Micaela's research analyzes the role of operatta, particularly works by Kalman and Grunwald, in shaping memory of pre-World War I Austria, both in the First Austrian Republic in the 1920s and '30sand in New York in the 1940s. Operetta production was the established center of the Viennese popular entertainment industry, but after World War I confronted a crisis. Micaela seeks to examine the effect of the government on the production of operettas and how the new social circustances influenced the choice of topics, ultimately leading to the enshrining of an idealized image of pre-World War I Austria.
