Ann Morning's dissertation, entitled "The Nature of Race:
Teaching and Learning about Human Difference," studies how
definitions of race and racial difference are transmitted today
via education in the United States. She uses content analysis
of high-school textbooks and interviews with college faculty and
undergraduates to investigate the extent to which understandings
of race as a biological marker are challenged by competing notions
of racial groups as socially constructed. In general, Ann's research
interests are in race, demography, sociology of knowledge, and
