ASAP :: Outdoor Action Club
The purpose of this club is to engage in outdoor sports once in a while
(2-3 weeks). During the spring/summer, whitewater rafting/kayaking/hiking trips will be planned while during the winter skiing/snowboarding trips will be the
focus. Everyone is welcome and no experience in any activity is necessary.
This is a great opportunity to develop new interests while having fun.
If you have other activities in mind and/or are interested in volunteering
to help organize an event, send an email to Pallav (pgupta@).
Events
- White water Rafting: May 22
thank you to all who showed up for hiking last time. for those who didn't,
redemption is possible. i'm planning a whitewater rafting trip on the
lehigh river. so here is the event and details as follows:
event: whitewater rafting on the legigh river in jim thorpe, PA.
day: may 22, 2004 (saturday)
time: 8:30 am - 6:00/7:00 pm (we will have to start early because launch
times are governed by state. if we dont make it, we will NOT be rafting
that day)
cost: $52 per person
i think this will be a good day as generals will be over, ppl will
not have left for summer vacation/jobs, memorial day
weekend will be undisturbed, and/or most ppl will have nothing interesting
to do on that day anyways :)....
also note that this trip will take place in rain or sunshine (policy of
outfitters). hopefully we'll have sunshine.
the cost is for an individual. however, if we get a group of
18+ the cost will come down to $47 (in that case i will return some bucks
back to you). if the weather is bad and you are
required to wear a wet suit you will have to rent a wet suit for $12 per
person.
if you would like to go on this trip, you need to do the following:
1. RVSP to pallav (pgupta@princeton.edu) by May 6, 2004 (no extensions); AND
2. Either stop by in B219 (E-quad) (i'm generally in after 12:00 am) and
give me a check for $52 or send me a check via departmental mail and let
me know that you're doing so.
the reason why i must ask for this is because I must pay in FULL 10 days
before the trip to the outfitters. if the trip gets cancelled (i.e. we
have fewer than 6 ppl (the minimum we need for a single raft)) at the
time of RSVP, then your money will be refunded. however, if you sign up
and back out, your money will NOT be refunded (policy of the outfitters).
so make sure you understand this and sign up only if you are CERTAIN you
will go. thanks for your understanding on this.
we will be utilizing the jim thorpe outfitters. you can get information at
the following website:
http://www.jtraft.com/
furthemore, we will need to carpool once again, so if you have a car
please volunteer to drive and tell me how many ppl you will carpool when
you RSVP. it will be a 2 hour drive once again to jim thorpe, PA. so we
leave around 8:30 - 9:00, get there by 11:00 or so depend upon when we are
required to be there. start rafting, the path will be 12-16 miles and will
take 4-6 hours to complete. and then 2 hours back again. so consider the
whole day wasted :) (err, i mean worthwhile)
now a couple of FAQ for some of you how may be terrified and don't want to
raft.
1. do i need to know swimming?
umm..NO. i talked with the outfitter and they told me that you don't need
to know swimming. everyone will wear life jackets and there will be
experts on the kayaking guiding the rafts and looking out for us (yeah
right :)).
2. what type of white water rafting is it?
it will be class II/III rapids. mighty fun stuff. lots of adrenaline
flowing as i've been told :)
3. do i need prior experience?
absolutely not. it'll be my first time doing it on rapids myself. everyone
is welcome. unless u try it, you will never get experience.
if you have any other questions/clarifications, feel free to email me (and
not this list). i will try to answer them. sorry for this long email. just
wanna make sure everyone who is interested is on the same page.
in summary, remember, RSVP ONLY IF YOUR CERTAIN that you will go, pay the
money (remember no refunds) by May 6, 2004. and for this
trip to be a go, i need 5 ppl. it would be nice if we had a
multiple of 4/6 ppls (that way we can hog the rafts :)).
if less thn 5 ppl sign up, trip is cancelled. thanks for your time.
