Nec quicquam aliud est philosophia, si interpretari velis, praeter studium sapientiae; sapientia autem est rerum divinarum et humanarum causarumque quibus eae res continentur scientia.
Cicero, De Officiis ii. ii. Sect.5
The Statement of Purpose:
  • The Philology and Philosophy Project, would like to contribute to the study of the textual tradition - initially in the Husserl-Heidegger-Gadamer line - of modern philosophy.
  • We will apply recently developed techniques of electronic indexing and Web-based delivery to the textual monuments of that tradition.
  • Computers may not be able to map the location of wisdom and truth, but computers can map the location of the words philosophers used.
  • We will deliver wordlists indexed to page numbers of the printed edition for texts still under copyright.
  • For texts out of copyright we will construct a hypertext web of timelines, bibliographic aids, and text search functions.
  • We hope to be helpful to beginners as well as seasoned scholars by presenting well-known and well-debated texts from the radical perspective of electronic tools.

The Disclaimer:
  • This site is under construction. Please excuse blind alleys and broken links.
  • This site is an experiment - we hope to see if it is possible to deliver both analyses and the tools used to create the analyses. There will be an element of the untidy. We welcome suggestions as well as corrigienda and hope they will be offered in good humor.
  • There will be an error rate of under two percent in the listings of page numbers. We make no warrant that anything cited from this site will be accurate. Please check all citations against the published text.

The Development Team:
  • Dr. Walter Lammi, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at The American University in Cairo. Prof. Lammi has published several articles on Gadamer.
  • Dr. Peter Batke, Humanities Computing specialist at Princeton University. Dr. Batke has developed various methodologies for the electronic study of texts since the late seventies at UNC, Duke and Johns Hopkins.
