Minutes of Advisory Council Meeting
October 9, 1997


Journal

  • First national undergraduate journal
  • Submissions from students across the country
  • Surveys undergraduate opinions of bioethics issues
  • Published mid-December 1997
  • Editors: Rob McInturff and Isabelle Von Kohorn
  • Editing process-
    1. Get submissions
    2. Establish editorial staff of already 25 undergraduates interested
    3. Selecting and editing the submissions:
      • Clear, well supported arguments, regardless of view
      • Careful not to stifle voice of the author
  • Topics of current submissions:
    • Euthanasia
    • Cloning
    • Genetic testing of humans
    • Huntington's disease
    • Human genome project
  • Future journals devoted to a single topic per issue
  • Questions:
    1. How do we make the journal as professional as possible?
    2. Do you have any suggestions to foster contact with undergraduates or other valuable advice?

Speakers Committee

  1. 10 students to compile list of topics
    • Bring speakers to campus
    • How to refine topics?
    • Names of speakers and how to bring them to Princeton?
  2. Compile Calendar
    • Put on web page
    • Has related events / non-bioethics forum sponsored events
    • Background paper for each lecture
    • Web-page follow-up article

Extramural Fundraising

  1. Long term--raise in $50,000 increments used for
    • Annual national conference
    • Hosting speakers
    • Scholarships to bring students to campus for event
    Development office = rated individuals capable of large donation

  2. Short term-
    • Support annual operation, journal, speakers
    • Donations from DeCamp
    • Looking for $1000 donations
    • Provide names for $1000 donors?

Intramural Fundraising

  • Contact departments: Mo-Bio, Woody Woo, De Camp, EEB, PHI, PSY, CST etc.
  • Selling T-shirts, three-fold reason
    1. Fundraising
    2. Get students involved in forum
    3. Increase awareness (snowball effect)
Outreach--targeting institutions with interested students
  1. For Journal
  2. Organize national conference
  3. Raise awareness
  4. Cultivate those already interested

Conference

  • Next November for three days
  • Keynote lectures
  • Smaller discussions and panels
  • Small student discussions and debates
  • Important focus on undergraduate thought and interests
  • Initiate policy program:
    1. Petitions to legislative bodies
    2. Key = bring students together
    3. Discuss "how to start group like Bioethics Forum"

Post Baccalaureate

  • Find places for undergraduates to perpetuate interests
  • Summer programs
  • Internships
  • Comprehensive list on homepage

Reunions

Bioethics Colloquium during Reunions 1998:
  1. Sponsoring departments
  2. Small financial burden -travel, lodging, etc.
  3. Morning sessions
    • General overview - introduction, generate ideas
    • Religion and bioethics
  4. Afternoon sessions
    • Panel on Human Genome Project - want all perspectives
    • Doctor/Patient Relationship - (physician assisted suicide)

Off-Campus Opportunities

  • Students interacting with other students and professionals
  • Partnership with Princeton Medical Center Ethics Board
  • Suggestions for off-campus opportunities

General Comments

  1. Electronically publish journal - initially decided against it
  2. Extramural can get medical school related activities (Macklin)
  3. Point/Counterpoint section of Journal - yes in the future (Reinhardt)
  4. Book reviews lead to revenue
  5. Student Memberships in professional organizations
