MICHAEL T. ORCHARD, Associate Professor

B-301 Engineering Quadrangle

Fields of Research Activity: Image and video compression and processing, motion analysis for video representation, digital signal processing, and fast algorithms.

Experience: Eight years of experience in corporate research, and five years of teaching experience. He has authored many technical papers.

Biography: Michael T. Orchard received the B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from San Diego State University in 1980 and 1986, respectively. He worked at the Government Products Division of Scientific Atlanta from 1982 to 1986, developing passive sonar DSP applications. Since 1988, he has interned and consulted with the Visual Communications department of AT&T Bell Laboratories, working on problems in video coding. In 1990 he received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University. From 1990 to 1995, he was with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and as Research Assistant Professor in the Coordinated Science Laboratory and the Beckman Institute. He served as Associate Director of the Image Laboratory of the Beckman Institute. In 1993, Dr. Orchard received the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award. In 1995, he joined the Princeton University Department of Electrical Engineering as Associate Professor.
