Frequently asked questions

How many meals does the Co-op provide?
With about 25 members, the Co-op provides 7 meals a week - dinner every night. Each meal is prepared by 3-4 Co-op members.

How about breakfast, lunch, snacks etc etc?
Don't worry, there is always food in the Co-op, and you can come eat any time you want. People usually go for cereal or fruits for breakfast, and sandwiches for lunch. There are often leftovers from dinner, which make really yummy lunches as well.

As a Co-op member, what are my responsibilites?
Each Co-op member is responsible for cooking once a week. It takes about 2 hours to prepare dinner, plus an hour to clean up. Besides cooking, each member also has a chore. That varies from going shopping at Wegman's and Sam's Club to keeping the pantry tidy. You can have a look at the member's page to see what kind of chores there are. Other than that, it is just common sense - clean your own dishes after you eat, wipe off the table if you spilt your milk etc.

What if I cannot cook on my cooking night?
Since you failed to fulfill your Co-op duty, you are going to be kicked out ... just kidding. The Co-op is very flexible. If you cannot cook on your cooking night, just ask for a switch. You can arrange it with another Co-op member on your own, or you can use our email list.

I don't know how to cook. Can I join?
Of course! Most of us learned to cook through the Co-op. Since we are cooking in groups of three, it is much easier to pick up cooking skills from each other. The Co-op also has a bookshelf of cookbooks, so you can pick whatever you want to make and try it out!

How much does it cost?
Believe it or not, it only costs $600 for one semester! Since we order things in bulk, it is actually cheaper to join the Co-op than to be completely independent. You also save time since you don't have to cook every night, or spend 2 to 3 hours every weekend for grocery shopping. Once you get the key, you can come and eat in the Co-op any time you want!

There are so few people in the Co-op compared to an Eating Club. Will it be more difficult to meet new people?
It depends on your definition of meeting new people. Since there are so few of us in the Co-op, we are really close to each other. In an Eating Club, you do see a lot of different people. But most of the time you eat with the handful of people that you joined with, and the rest are just acquaintances. At Brown, no one is just an acquaintance.

Can I come and try it out?
Sure! Just email us and tell us when you want to stop by for dinner.
