Dormnet
What is Dormnet?
Dormnet is the internet service that the university runs for its students. Most of the Graduate housing complexes have been connected to dorment for years, but Butler was only connected in the summer of '03. Residents are automatically subscribed to the service. You can now register multiple devices without an extra fee.
Alternatively see this link
How do I connect to Dormnet?
There should be ethernet connections in each bedroom. Plug your internet cable from the back of the computer to the socket. For registering your computer and configuring your connection see: http://support.princeton.edu/dormnet/. There is also wireless internet access available in all the units.
What if I want to report a problem?
If you can't access the internet then you're probably not going to be able to read this answer, but for completeness sake, you can either check with the OIT Help
Desk website to see if they know about the outage or call 258-HELP.
Why don't I have an electric bill?
When the dormnet hubs were constructed in Butler back in the summer of 2003, these hubs were connected to the power lines of some of the apartments, and are consuming their electricity. If you live in one of the affected units, you will no longer have electric charges on your PSE&G bill (starting July 1st, 2005). Instead, residents in these apartments will be charged a fixed amount of $16 per month per apartment (or $8/person) as part of their rent, regardless of actual electric usage. This amount was estimated based on actual utility bills.
Any problems with this scheme (if you are being charged for electricity on your bill, for example) should be reported to Patty Smith at psmith@princeton.edu or reported to 258-1908. A map showing the affected units can be seen here.
