  • Avoiding Catastrophe at Butler

The single most important thing to remember is to never leave the heat off during winter break. If you do, your pipes will freeze and crack. Then your apartment will fill with water. Then extensive repairs will be required, and you will have to pay for them (to say nothing of the damage to your own property). So, when you leave your apartment during the winter, leave the furnace plugged in, and set the thermostat no lower than 60 degrees F.

Some apartments are equipped with an outside spigot. These typically have a control valve located somewhere in the kitchen. Since the pipes for the spigot run under the house, it's recommended that, during the winter months, you shut off the control valve and open the spigot. This way, the pipe will be empty and cannot freeze.

Also, if you have a screen door, please do not prop it open. Apparently there has been a rash of doors broken by gusty winds, and subsequently unhappy Butlerities, who discover that they are responsible for paying for the damages.
