Parking
Graduate Student parking information.
You must get a parking decal to you at the parking office on the A level of the New South building. Bring your registration, copy of your lease, and student ID. All vehicles must display this decal. Students may request a limited number of passes to use throughout the academic year for parking in Lot 21 or the graduate student signed areas on Western Way and FitzRandolph Road. Requests must be made in writing to the Office of Transportation & Parking Services. After 5 pm, Monday through Friday and on weekends, students may park in any numbered lots except for Lots 8, 9 and 18.
In addition, all vehicles must park in designated spaces and NOT against the flow of traffic. Princeton Township police may issue tickets for parking violations in Butler.
Telephone Service
You are responsible for arranging telephone service, which may be done by contacting Verizon (1-800-VERIZON). Information about installation, service, and deposit fees can be obtained directly from Verizon. Arrangements for telephone installation may be made prior to your arrival in Princeton. Interior telephone wire maintenance is provided by the University, and exterior line maintenance is the responsibility of Verizon.
Utilities
NOTE: A few units will not be charged for electrical usage from PSE&G. A flat rate of $16/month will be included in your monthly rent. This is due to an issue relating to the way Dormnet is set up in Butler. For more information, please see this page.
Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) is the utility company serving the Princeton area. New residents must contact the utility company before they occupy their residence to ask for utility service. PSEG
Please be aware that many students are required to pay a deposit before PSE&G initiates service. This deposit generally amounts to an average two-month utility bill for the unit. Exemption from the deposit may be granted depending upon (1) whether the tenant has a good credit record with the company or (2) the tenant's employment situation warrants it. Graduate students are encouraged to explain their income (stipend, spouse's salary, etc.) when making their initial contact with the utility company. Deposits are refunded after one year of good credit.
Internet Access
See the Dormnet information page.
Television
You may wish to subscribe to cable television. Comcast holds the contract for the Princeton area. Interested students should contact Comcast directly:
Comcast
1-800-266-2278, 24 hours, 7 days a week
Some Butler residents subscribe to satellite television service. DirecTV seems to be a popular choice, and in Princeton you can receive the local channels for the Philadelphia region. Please bear in mind that if you subscribe to satellite television service, you must find a way to mount the satellite safely but NOT by a permanent attachment. Some residents have created wooden fixtures strapped to their back porch railings for this purpose. If you are interested, take a walk around the complex when you arrive to see what solutions are possible. Please consult with the Housing Department to find out specific restrictions. By the same token, there are restrictions on the use of a TV antenna.

Surviving (enjoying?) Winter in Butler
For tips on living in Butler during the winter, see our winter tips page.
What to Expect
Moving into Butler, you should expect to find the following
- the unit completely cleaned
- the unit painted as needed
- the floors waxed
- the bathroom and kitchen fixtures cleaned
and functional
- the windows cleaned, with shades
Between occupancies, the University's Physical Plant Department attempts to complete any needed repairs. This is not always possible due to the very short period each unit is vacant and the tendency for most vacancies to occur within a very short period of time. So please report anything that needs repair to the Superintendent.
What to Bring
Butler apartments are unfurnished but do include a refrigerator and stove. You need to provide your own furniture (see above), including curtains, carpeting (if desired -- remember it must be area rugs and not installed carpeting), and shower curtains.
