Organization Description and Mission

For 15 years, Princeton Young Achievers has been a unique after-school program that helps Princeton children in K-5th grade from low- and moderate-income neighborhoods improve their school performance and English language skills.

Every Monday through Friday, children meet at three neighborhood centers for:

• Homework support
• Enrichment activities, such as science and art projects
• One-on-one tutoring
• Literacy support

PYA students also enjoy other fun activities, such as field trips and life-skill enrichment such as nutrition and character education.  The organization has set a goal to tap into existing community resources. Teachers and volunteers for Princeton Young Achievers assist children with homework and general tutoring; volunteers can also lead science experiments, art projects, or cultural activities.

Recently, PYA initiated a Computer Literacy Initiative to take on the digital literacy divide with the help of partners such as Princeton Regional Schools, the Girl Scouts, and the Concordia Foundation.  This initiative has provided twenty computers with internet services to the PYA afterschool learning centers in Princeton.  As a result, Princeton Young Achievers now can provide supervised homework research to kids and internet safety training to parents using the expertise of partners in the community.

Other projects include:

  • Creative Fridays… From 3:30-5:30 p.m. each Friday, PYA Centers turn into real art studios where Arts Council of Princeton instructors encourage children to express themselves through art.

  • Holiday Supply/Toy Drives take place, helping PYA and their families. This effort is made possible thanks to partnerships with Princeton University's Community House / Athletes In Action as well as The Princeton Human Services Commission.
