Welcome to my home page. I am Professor of Politics and Public Affairs at the Department of Politics and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs in Princeton University. I teach and do research on political economy and comparative politics. I am the co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Comparative Politics, published in 2007. My latest book, Democracy and Redistribution, models the causes of democracy as well as its impact on the distribution of wealth and the welfare of citizens. My current projects include: the book The Birth of Party Democracy, which explores the political conditions that led to the emergence of various party systems and electoral institutions in advanced democracies at the turn of the 20th century; the application of agent-based models to understand the formation of states; the use of osteological evidence to trace the sources and evolution of inequality over time; the examination of the impact of constitutional design on democratic stability; and the internal structure of dictatorships.
