Welcome to my home page. I am the Robert Garrett Professor of Politics and Public Affairs in the Department of Politics and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. I teach and do research on political economy and comparative politics. I am the co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Comparative Politics, published in 2007. My latest book, Democracy and Redistribution, models the causes of democracy as well as its impact on the distribution of wealth and the welfare of citizens. My current projects include: the exploration of the origins and persistence of inequality; the analysis of the conditions that led to the emergence of various party systems and electoral institutions in advanced democracies; the application of agent-based models to understand the formation of states; and the internal structure of dictatorships.
