2009 GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS

On May 29, 2009, at Chemistry’s Reunions events, a number of Chemistry Graduate Students
were presented with awards by Prof. Steven Bernasek, Director of Graduate Studies.


  Joe Carpenter

The Merck-Patchett Summer Fellowship was presented to Joseph Carpenter a student with David W. C. MacMillan. This award, which was provided to Princeton by an alumnus of Princeton and former executive at Merck, Dr. Arthur Patchett ’51, is granted to a top graduate student in organic chemistry. Joe was also the recipient of a Harold W. Dodds University Honorific Fellowship for the 2009-2010 academic year. Honorific fellowships promise and represent high commendation from the Princeton University Graduate School..

 

  Casey Jones
Casey Jones, a student with Jeffrey Schwartz, was the recipient of the Herman & Margaret Sokol Teaching Award which is awarded in recognition of sustained excellence in undergraduate teaching.
 

 
Brent Chandler
The Hubert Alyea ’24 Teaching Award for continued excellence in undergraduate teaching was won by two students, Brent Chandler (l), who works with Erik Sorensen, and Chase Zachary (r), a student in the group of Prof. Salvatore Torquato.

The final award for teaching excellence, The Pickering Award, was presented to Anna Allen & Mark Vander Wal, students of David MacMillan, Pearl Dickerson & Amber Hibberd, who both work with Steven Bernasek, Ashley Donovan, a student with Herschel Rabitz, and  Amanda Tricarico a student with Andrew Bocarsly.

The Elmer Badin *45 Graduate Student Prize is awarded every two years to a top second-year student, based on grades, research ratings and faculty letters of recommendation. This year there were two winners as it was impossible to distinguish between them. They were Anna Allen (l) of David MacMillan's group and Livia Vastag (r) of Joshua Rabinowitz's group.

  Dustin Jenkins
Dustin Jenkins (r) of the Bernhard group and Ellazar Niangar (l) who works with Andrew Bocarsly, were the recipients of the Wyeth Third-Year Seminar Prize. This award recognizes excellence in research communication, clarity of presentation and depth of knowledge as demonstrated in the Third Year Seminar series. The winners were determined by a panel of 4th year graduate students.
