The Technology: How it works
Accessories
As previously mentioned, electric vehicles contain the same accessories
as combustion vehicles, but the way in which these accessories get
power is much more different. Examples of these accessories include
radios, lifts, air conditions, and power steering. In ICE vehicles,
the combustion engine has a 12V generator, which helps to supply
power for the necessary components. For EVs, a device called a
DC to DC converter drops the voltage from around 300 volts to 12
volts so that all the powered devices can be used. Also, for heating
and air conditioning, manufacturers have been able to develop an
efficient reversible heat pump for both heating and cooling. Finally,
power steering is accomplished by adding a single speed DC motor
that is coupled to the power steering pump to provide easier steering.
While the accessories in ICE vehicles and EVs are the same, they
receive power in slightly different ways.
